ORVOAD Short-Term Recovery Committee meeting:

Wednesday Sept. 8, OR Food Bank, 1pm, Conf. Room C
7900 Northeast 33rd Drive
Portland, OR 97211-1918
(503) 282-0555
Note: if you aren't already part of the committee, you're welcome to attend - but please RSVP to: info@orvoad.org

The need: There is a critical period during every disaster which is known as the "short-term recovery" period. This is the time in a disaster after the initial disaster response, but before the long-term recovery group has been officially established.

Getting to an area earlier in a disaster allows ORVOAD and its members and partners to assist a community to get its long-term recovery group up and running more rapidly than has previously been possible, which means that less people will "fall through the cracks."

The objective: Develop an ORVOAD short-term recovery committee, which will assist communities in disaster during this critical period between the initial disaster response and creation of their own long-term recovery committee.

The Urban Area Security Initiative – Citizen Corps Conference

Integrating Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery Partners

November 5th and 6th, 2010 at the Holiday Inn, Portland Airport

At this point all potential speakers and booth operators are just that, ‘potential’.

Not all Speakers who submit a form will be chosen to present at the conference, and not all booth requests will be able to be fulfilled.  Conference planners anticipate many excellent submissions and the conference planning team will need to narrow them down.

Speakers

All potential speakers will be notified by August 10th if they are confirmed to present and at that point we will determine what time on Friday or Saturday they will present.  Some speakers may be asked to present on both days and depending on availability and the overall schedule we will include as many presentations as we can without overwhelming our students with options.  We have up to 5 rooms available each day.

Speakers are strongly encouraged to stay throughout this conference as they will gain valuable insights and knowledge from the other classes and participants. Speakers will not be charged for their attendance at the conference

Our Nov 5th (Friday) date is focused on delivering presentations to our leadership level folks.  This is a day for more advanced level curriculum.  Risk and Emergency Managers, Citizen Corps Program Managers, Star Volunteers, 211 staff, Faith-based organization leaders, Elected Officials, Representatives from the Urban Area Security Initiative Working Groups, and those in many different service areas and levels of government.

Our
Nov 6th (Saturday) date will have a mix of beginning level classes up to advanced classes, all focused for our 'boots on the ground' type staff and volunteers.  These are our Voluntary/Community Organizations Active in Disasters, Citizen Corps Program participants, Amateur Radio Operators, Civil Air Patrol, College Program Managers and others.

Booths – Best Practice Sharing, Vendors and Region 10 Award Presentations!

We also have our celebrated Nov 5th, Friday evening Networking Event.  Which begins at 5:00 p.m. (immediately after sessions end on Friday) and continues until 8:30 p.m.

Extremely popular during the last conference, we have expanded it slightly.  Therefore, our 2010 Networking event will include its regular ‘Show and Tell’ portion which allows our programs to bring their ‘Best Practices’ (Examples of things shared last year were: temporary tattoos with program logos that were a GREAT deal with the manufacturers information and prices so that other programs could duplicate; Newsletters and how the organizations creatively funded a series of them; databases; Great displays; Lists of fantastic volunteer roles and responsibilities; Protocols…and much more). Disaster Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery Vendors with prizes for those present and displays of great materials and equipment.

As usual light snacks will be served with a no host bar available.  The exciting addition is the Presentation of the ‘Best of Region 10 Community Preparedness Awards’  (nomination forms for these awards are being disseminated by FEMA region 10, if you have not rec’d yours, PLEASE contact Bretsch, Fred (fred.bretsch@dhs.gov)

If you know of a great volunteer disaster related program – send the booth request form to them as well as a Save the Date note about attending the conference!

Our Website for the conference should be up and running soon and registration will open on July 15th.  Everyone who registers prior to Sept 1st pays $40 versus $60 after that!  A great price to TWO days of fantastic classes!

Let me know if you have any questions.  As a member of the planning team, I look forward to seeing your booth and / or speaker form.
